I'm fond of the Dead. My dad played a lot of Woody Guthrie records when I was a lad, which included the first version of many that I heard of that tune. I also heard a Bill Monroe version at his Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival, and some years later a local troubadour who played often at a bar where I tended did a jailhouse version. And of course the Dead version, which was a staple in high school. Wore that album out. I think I was 30 the first time I saw them in concert, though, surrounded by a lot of tripping youngsters. Sort of unsettling.
I was a folk music junkie and loved this song. The first time I heard it I was surprised at how good the Dead's version was. I still like to listen to it.
Try "Goin' Down the Road Feellin' Bad" by the Grateful Dead.
